If you are that outright offended by a word then you really need to get your priorities straight. The fact of the matter is people couldn't care less what you say to them on the internet (especially a multiplayer game where you murder each other) - thats what makes it so beautiful. People want to be able to say what they want to say even if it does happen to offend the 0.0000001% of people who are listening.

WORDS have meanings behind them. WORDS have caused lots of things to happen. WORDS although said as a joke have caused bad things to happen. Just because you have not experienced it doesn't mean others have also not experienced it.

Just because one can not personally relate to the meaning of the words does not lessen their impact on others. The fact still stands that a lot of people hide behind a guise of the internet and you do not know everyone's personal context or story. As such, and has been stated, the truth is that whilst it may not affect you, there is a chance that is can seriously affect someone else and that is something that should not be "joked" around with.

I personally think that sometimes admins can be too harsh as shown by nexus above ^. I think overall we just need to be more lenient, if someone says "the r word" a couple times not directed at anyone particular that's fine and shouldn't be insta-gagged which is the case sometimes.

I agree with you and your earlier responses helped explain what my points were.
Ultimately I think that we have a tendency to be way too protective. Just because a couple of people have expressed some discomfort in the past doesn't mean that a blanket ban is required. As a whole, this community has had its minges come and go, and many have been banned for other reasons than language rules.

While what Straight said is true and that some people may have come, I think that this is a significantly smaller number than those that have been forced to leave as a result of language rules. We are driving a lot of good players away, as I had stated earlier.
Do we have a figure of how often this has happened on our server? An example of people forced to leave due to them?

We are relying a lot on the "chance" of somebody being offended, not the actual number of people who have been. Of course - bad behaviour is bad behaviour whether it is on the internet or not - however, a lot of people come here to ESCAPE the grind of daily life, not to be pushed back in to it. I think that some people letting loose isn't always a bad thing.

We've discussed common sense before and I do agree that it's common sense not to use such language, but there are often things said that you wouldn't consider "common sense" or something that may be offensive to others, that aren't in the rules.

I do understand your points, but what Nexus says still stands. Yes, once upon a time, the server had been overflowing even with the strict rules. However, that was 2 years ago, and a lot has changed since then. You have been around long enough to notice the decline of the server and the gradual process of old community members leaving, such as Bena due to the harsh rules.

It isn't manipulative to consider reform to try and stop the decline of a server. I get that you may not agree with him but I find it unfair that you are calling him out for trying to express his opinion on the server decline. Clearly, the rules aren't fun for everybody. A lot of people ARE leaving.

Edit: I've also seen things said that are not banned in the rules that you wouldn't exactly consider "friendly" to kids and young people.

Well, if someone is discomforted by the use of words by other people who they do not know, why should they be the ones who should leave? It is fair just to push the people away who are offended by said words just because they cannot handle someone's incapacity to restrain their language? Of course not. This is here to be an open community comfortable to all, so a restriction on language is beneficial to make it an environment comfortable to anyone.

Furthermore, you say that people come to escape (agreed) but to say they don't want to be pushed back into is also unfair as by saying certain damaging words, it can force someone who came here NOT to be ridiculed, demoralised, marginalised to feel offended and put back into an environment in which they receive that. Furthermore, it is not fair to reveal any numbers of people who have been offended as it is THEIR PRIVACY. It is not the agenda of all the members of the server to know a possibly very private and difficult backstory of individuals here.

I agree entirely and I think you said it better than i could have. The fact is the server IS declining, so why not make a change to a previously untouched matter and see what happens. Theres no use going "we cant do that, it would be bad" if we haven't even tried it.

Well, the matter has been touched by the higher ups as we recently updated the !motd and how we handle things, which has been implemented.

Not all of the admins know the backstory of individuals either. The numbers of people that are offended is not the same as revealing who was offended. Most of the community aren't actually aware of a lot of admin affairs as there is so little transparency on thisserver.. A restriction on language DOESN'T make it comfortable for everybody. And as I said, I believe that a smaller number of people have come here to escape being offended then those that don't.

I feel bad for those that receive abuse in their lives and it is our job and our duty to try and make them feel better on an individual basis. Instead, we are excluding a number of those that want to join. We are pushing so many people away because a select few are offended.

Numbers ARE important because in all honesty, from what I have seen, it sometimes appears that the Admins only want the rules to stay in place as they are to avoid their own personal offence, not the offence of the broader community.

I mean I know of many homosexual people, none of which find the word "fa**ot" offensive. Now this may not mean that every homosexual in the world won't find the word offensive but we can't just assume that the word is offensive too every gay person either. Now I think that at the least if a person expresses genuine insult to the phrases that the other player be warned/muted or gagged otherwise no action needs to be taken.

Edit: And to build on this, why gag people who say "fa**ot" when you aren't even sure that there are homosexual people on the server in the first place.

Note: not meant to offend / cause a nuisance.

Am gay and do often use the word to refer to my fellow gays, can confirm. The word has been reclaimed in a lot of circles.

    PEOPLES PERSONAL LIVES ARE PERSONAL
You dont need to know everything about everyone
Some people can stay silent about things that offend them but it would be better if it didnt happen at all

To be honest, this is just telling me that my point was true.. That some admins prefer it not to happen for their own sake, not for the community. The admins don't know everything as it is, they are no different in the community in this case. It would be better if nobody was offended but surely it is the responsibility of the individual to come forward and express their concerns?

If they are staying silent about it then often it could just be the case that they aren't actually that offended?
Plenty of comments have been thrown your way and mine too in the past that may be offensive. But neither of us spoke out all the time, nor did we call for them to be banned.

I hate using other servers as an example but places like Poseidon who have more relaxed language rules do a lot better player-wise because it caters for the majority. Even then you dont see people ranting on about how they were offended because someone used a word, it just doesnt happen. The whole notion that "people may be offended therefore we cant risk using the words" is just fabricated nonsense, in all honesty. I hate to break it to you, but if you dont like being offended or cant tolerate what other people say then the internet - and the Gmod community on the whole is not the place for you. Its almost unavoidable that you will be offended on the internet, so saying that arcadia provides some sort of sanctuary against that is ridiculous.

Not trying to flame here, just debating, pls no hate.

But surely you can't stop people from saying this because there may be someone silently getting offended. If you don't speak up about your displeasure then it's really your own fault that the behaviour isn't dealt with.

Again, no hard feelings, just debating.

Think of it like an RDM. The punishment can't be dealt out unless you actually DO SOMETHING about it. If you choose to keep quiet and not report, then nothing gets done.
Why should it not be the same for language?
